Day 61: Birds not quite of a feather...

Day 61: ...still have their water cooler moments

The regular reader will be aware the this blog has accidentally become a bit of a record of the backyard flora and fauna. It wasn't always intended to be so but some days, well, that's just how it is...

The noisy miners take on just about anything that shouldn't be here, especially the kookaburras, galahs, magpies and cockatoos; the pale-headed rosellas don't hang around long enough to be photographed; the crows are a relatively new incursion in our suburban idyll; while the tawny frogmouth just perches, and observes. When you watch for long enough, there appears to be a pecking order (yes, pun) between bird species and within bird species. The rainbow lorikeets very clearly know who is boss.

Over there?
Mwhaha...behind you...

Birdbath antics
That's why, whenever I see the scaly-breasted lorikeet in the yard, I'm fascinated with its interaction with its rainbow-coloured cousins...the scaly-breasted loris, notwithstanding their slightly smaller stature, seem to win every time. It was clear at the birdbath this morning, the rainbow was highly alert to the presence of its scaly cousin...and exited the water fairly quickly.

It was a most intriguing morning.
