Day 187.5: Reading the signs at #bustthebudget Brisbane

Day 187.5: ...can you hear the people...?

I just thought I'd show a few of the pics from today's demonstration in town, much of the analysis I'll leave to my politics blog. I'm currently working on a research project about political engagement, here and in Japan: why that engagement is not as high as it might be? What makes us 'political'? How do we as voters engage with our representatives? I think there is a good comparative study to be made between Australia and Japan and so I attend various events here, and in Japan when I can, trying to gauge community engagement. It makes for interesting observations.

Today's gathering centred on Queens Park in Brisbane, under the watchful eye of one Queen Victoria. Yes, there's something to be said about that. Thereafter, the group went on a short march and ended up back in the park. There was a diverse group of people there...it seems engagement is on the up and up...

Rallies such as this were held across Australia today. What is to come of it? Well, that's what I'm working on.

Here's a sample of what we saw:

Day 187: In the shadows...

Day 187: ...a self portrait, of sorts

Sometimes, in my role as political scientist, I have to go off and do some analysis of events, what we call in the trade 'participant observation'. It means I'm there with two hats on: one to observe the event for purposes of research; the other as, well, me. Sometimes, one needs to do more than simply cast one's vote every three years and I have been a participant in the political process one way or another for many many years now. There's a follow-up Day 187.5 post coming up and a little further exploration over at psephy's ~ologies shortly too.

We live in interesting times, both here in Australia and in Japan, as increasing numbers of people, many of whom haven't done so, head for the streets to demonstrate dissatisfaction at Government decisions.

Once we'd finished, I headed over to our favourite South Bank again to catch the bus. Such a beautiful blue sky day, again, there was so much one could have taken.

The patterns in the grass caught my eye. The last week or so has seen a children's school holiday event at South Bank and the structures have just been removed. Fascinating what remains. There is of course the wheel...too irresistible on a blue sky day, just sitting above the trees...

A mere shadow of oneselfie...

Just wheelin' in the bluesky...

If a 'selfie' is but a shadow of oneself, is it in fact, a 'selfie'?

Day 186: On a hot tin roof...

Day 186: ...however you make your music

I do enjoy my music Saturdays. Today was one of those days. Clarinets in the morning (after a dash to take friends to the airport) then back towards home for the coffee shop gig. I'm getting a little braver with that one, playing just out of the arcade instead of deep within it where I can't be seen.

People in the area are very kind and I feel like a busker...they offer money! What a surprise...unless it is money to make me go away.

Anyway, since it is just a hobby for me, we're starting up a 'pay it forward fund' with the busking dosh. Anything that comes my way goes straight into the kitty so we can pay for a coffee for someone who mightn't otherwise be able too. Now that's community!

I didn't really have time for pics today, except for another bluesky effort at midday, the end of clarinet rehearsal. It is the roof of the community centre where we rehearse. It was a perfect blue against the blue.

Day 185: Head in the clouds...

Day 185: ...cloudy days ahead...

I do love a cloudy sky, not for the weather it portends but photographically-speaking. And although I enjoy all the blue sky opportunities, well, you know, we need a change sometimes don't we.

Today's tasks were to simply keep writing until I realised I am sailing close to the deadline for the Ekka photo entries this year. I had to rush up to the photo store to order the reprints/enlargements in time to get them back, mount them and deliver them next by Wednesday. We'll cut it fine but should make it...bit like the Archibald Prize, last minute rush I suspect.

Oh, and I still have to make a final decision in the colour section: four pic limit--five to choose from. But I can do that on Monday. I hope. Two black and white ones too.

So, I decided to give the loris a rest today but I was attracted to the clouds: shapes, colours, patterns this morning; and then in spite of blue sky during the day, the clouds were back ten hours later (from the same point). A little phenomenon I observed today. I don't mind my head in the clouds from time to time.

Cloudy start...

Cloudy finish...

And, just in case you're missing it, the moon is on its way back...even the moon is in the clouds, a little.

Day 184: I can get by...

Day 184: ...and sometimes with a little help from my friends

Another day where I didn't move too far away from the writing table...just enough from time to time to check out the trees for colour and movement.

And there was plenty of that today. More blue sky, bit of an early morning chill factor and then...

Oh, morning!

Carry on...

...water!

Where did they find that in this rather dry weather? Anyway, they certainly had some fun with it and just to show us humans how to get by...with a little help, I can scratch your back, if you care to scratch mine.

Oi, 'scuse me...

Two can play at that...

Ta-de-dum...

Anything you can do...
Gotcha...

Hide and seek...

Counting, counting...

Such a delight.

Now, back to work.

Day 183: Backyard belligerents...

Day 183: ...the Baza returns

Somewhere between yesterday and today, we arrived at the halfway point of the project365 game for this year. My, that's a lot of pics and that is, dear reader, a lot of reading on your part. Thank you.

It was probably fair enough then that one of the most popular blog personalities made a return for today. It was a cold start to the day...so cold in fact that for the first time ever, I noticed little puffs of condensation coming from a lori's beak each time it squawked. Although I could see it, I wasn't quite quick enough to take a pic.

Of course, it was a cry for a serve of seed on this cold morning. It seemed pretty content thereafter, and the little puffs disappeared. This one is a regular visitor and I think we're getting used to each other and it doesn't mind playing the model to the hobby photographer.

I thought the different effect of the sunlight on the feathers (given the angle of the sun through the trees) was quite interesting.

Later in the day, the Baza was back, in the backyard breaking beaks with belligerent birds...or so went my tweet. Not just the miners today but the butcher birds as well swarmed around the Pacific Baza. It didn't have much time to settle, constantly on the move but it managed to grab a bite.

...and brunches...

The backyard remains a constant marvel.

Day 182: The sea, a canvas...

Day 182: ...clarity.

Today was an early start to head to the SunCoast. I had reason to go via Caloundra and for some reason, I threw my camera in the car at the last minute. I don't usually take the big cam to work but I thought I might have a chance to get some kanga pics on campus perhaps...or something.

As I crested the road going into Caloundra, I saw why I brought my camera along...the view. It is a familiar view of course, but today, with the early cold and the wind yesterday, the clarity was just breathtaking. I spent twenty minutes or so at my favourite beach, the Moffat Beach headland. I've tried to choose, from about 45 photos, a few which aim to capture the clarity...the sense of 'crystal clear'.

I was on my way to work, I couldn't stay as long as I might have liked, nor did I have a range of lenses.  In a way, it was a tough self-assignment. This beach has featured previously in this blog of course: close-ups, the sand the waves, where I walk. Today had a decidedly different, big picture intention.

A couple or three pics convey the mood of the moment. I'll leave you, dear reader, to decide which ones...
