Day 319.5 Meanwhile...

Day 319.5: ...across the river

The G20 in Brisbane is an important part of my work on international relations of the region.  When the formal proceedings are over there will be screeds of reports, analyses, communiques and so on to read over and analyse. I can do that in the comfort of my office.

But other events going on won't receive the same level of examination, media coverage or analysis. G20 meetings are often the focus of protests as well. Today, in 40 deg C temperatures, I ventured into town to observe what was expected to be the largest demonstration during the meeting.

There were impassioned speeches from the nation's First People, young and elders, activists and others. The crowd, some 1500 or so I estimate, listened and cheered in agreement and support. And there were police, many, many police.

There was an occasional motorcade as well as one POTUS headed out to UQ for a speech.

Gathering numbers

Climate Angels

Crowds gather

Seeking shade under the tree

In the heat of the moment

How hot?

Little people protests

The police

Waiting for the shuttle bus

There's a presidential limo over there

The marchers

Protests

Posters

Protests in all colours

Marchers continued

Persistent messages

The Angels were there

Everyone marched

Anonymous masks

Shuttle bus delayed by 90 minutes

I know what will go on behind those closed doors of the meeting, but it was just as important to see and hear the voices of those who are most affected by the decisions made 'across the river'.

It was the workings of a democratic society in all its facets. Hat tip to all.

Day 319: Meanwhile...

Day 319: ...some things remain the same

Today is the first of two days of international meetings here in Brisbane. The G20 group of nations meet to discuss...well, frankly, the sorts of things the always discuss. Every time they meet.

Which tells you something of the glacial pace of international meetings.

It has been hard to miss the preparations here in Brisbane over the last few months. Indeed, I have plans to head in today to observe a meeting or two myself (next post).

But amidst the plane watching, the motorcades, the shuttle buses, meetings, marches  and protests, I was charmed by two backyard visitors today.

Foraging

Perching

They're not as colourful as the loris but important and welcome visitors nonetheless.

Day 318.5: B.R.I.S.B.A.N.E...

Day 318.5: ...how we see it.

The sign is on the Cultural Forecourt, in front of QPAC. It is attracting a lot of attention. It lights up at night and the pics I've seen are quite impressive. I liked looking around it today. Today it bordered the the lockout fences but that wasn't deterring people, visitors and locals alike, from taking lots of photos, from all angles.

Yeah, it's BRIS to us.

It was all very interesting.

And then the fence...

Day 318: #G20...

Day 318: ...in Bris

It is finally here. The #G20. We've been working towards this for quite some time now here in Brisbane. I was fairly determined to get into the city today to have a look at a city under 'lockdown' and 'lockout'. I also had to visit the Mater Hospital...normally a simple case of catching the bus but the busway was also in lockdown...

Never mind, it meant I had to go via Boggo Road and catch a shuttle bus. Now this used to be our jail. Indeed, I've even been inside, many years ago, on an open day before it closed down for good. While the historic element of ye olde gaol remains, it is now the site of a research precinct and soon will include apartments, by the looks.

The old and new
In town, the buses got us quite close to South Bank where there was a bigger crowd than I expected. I also got to see the 'BRISBANE' sign at last. Quite picturesque against the blue sky.

Blue sky Brisbane I

Blue sky Brisbane II

Onto the hospital then to retrace my steps back to Boggo Road where I struck the patina of the setting sun against what once must have been a formidable wall...

Sun setting on the wall

Lockouts. Old and new.

Day 317: A day to flex...

Day 317: ...your feathers...

There was a sudden change in plan today, things unexpected. The day started with a little bit of rain so of course, dear reader, you realise that means flower and raindrops...in due course.

It also means that the loris call by on their perch and try to dry out. And although some of the poses were like their poses of other days, this morning there were some classics...indeed, one might say they were even doing a little in the way of tai chi...but that might be saying too much.

Scratch

Try this...

Look mum: one hand, er, claw...

Covert ops

My shield is made of steel feathers...

Hehe...

Glad I had that extra half an hour this morning, the loris are very entertaining just when you need it most.

Bonus instagram

Quite separate from the loris, a nice couple of pics of the floral raindrops which made their way onto Instagram a little earlier.

Day 316: Slow pic day...

Day 316: ...but then, hibiscus

You may be forgiven, dear reader, for thinking it was a slow pic day when all I can offer is yet another flower but I do find these ones intriguing.

These hibiscus are in the garden of the hospital I visit regularly and it is not just their colour that intrigues but their size. The are quite small whereas I'm more familiar with larger ones.

The colour, the patterns, the shape...

Besides...then there was 'work'...

Just amazing...

And let's face it, if the best thing to happen all day was to marvel at the flowers in the hospital garden, then it really can't have been that bad, can it.

Can it?

Day 315: To the beach...

Day 315: ...with purpose

Yes, so unsettled was I with the return to the office*, I decided to visit my mum today. I hadn't caught up with her since my return from Tokyo and you know, there was that certain expectation I'd join her again in tai chi, in a supportive role.

(*no, not really, I just thought I should visit my mum; I was at the office until 7.30pm, so I figure that counts. It won't take long to make up the time.)

Of course, a day at the coast for tai chi support work also means lunch and, today, inspection of the latest RSL Art Union home, at Currumbin, on Remembrance Day. Appropriate really.

Solitude (with screen)

Mum's poinciana...with a variation on the usual theme

And an oleander like I've never seen

The skyline: never far away

Excellent weather for such ventures really and of course: the beach. And what psephyspix  post doesn't like the beach?

So I thought I'd show a few examples, some of which include views from Mum's new house...

Oh, and a couple of flowers from her garden.

The poinciana has us truly amazed.
