National Japanese sweets day...

...well, OK then, if you insist  ... (167/365, 16 Jun 2022)

Every day is a 'day' of sorts isn't it. Sometimes, I wait patiently for the day that is just an ordinary, nothing in particular day. I guess I'll be waiting for a while. Some days, however, I can get behind. Today, in Japan it is national Japanese sweets day...I'm kind of a special tasting ambassador, self-appointed.

Sweets here can be quite simple, rather complex, and always seasonal. There is a concern in some quarters that the traditional Japanese sweet is being overwhelmed by the variety and style of 'Western' sweets, so-called, though I'm here to say I think they live happily side-by-side...

Anyway, today was a long long day of teaching followed by these extraordinary meetings we keep having late into the night, round in circles, rarely reaching conclusions, dragging out points from previous meetings, ad infinitum. I will not miss departmental meetings.

So I got home late, and really just had to resort to what was in the fridge. Tonight's desserts are courtesy of my local Japanese sweets specialist, conveniently located at the station. They have exquisite seasonally influenced sweets, so in honour of the day, their goldfish and fireworks jelly...

The 'sugary bits' on this one actually crackle like fireworks.

Kind of made up for the meeting I suppose. :)
